Understanding Tire Sizes:
Tire sizes can be written in several different formats, but they generally describe the tire's overall diameter, width, sidewall height, and the rim diameter it fits. The meaning of each number depends on the tire size format, so use the diagram above to identify what each measurement represents.
The Four Dimentions:
- A – Overall Diameter: The total height of the tire from the ground to the top of the tire when mounted and inflated.
- B – Section Width: The overall width of the tire from one sidewall to the other.
- C – Section Height: The height of the tire's sidewall, measured from the edge of the rim to the outside of the tread.
- D – Rim Diameter: The diameter of the rim the tire fits onto.
How to read the examples:
- 410/350-4
4.1" = Section Width (B)
3½" = Section Height (C)
4" = Rim Diameter (D) - 16x6.50-8
16" = Overall Diameter (A)
6½" = Section Width (B)
8" = Rim Diameter (D) - 480-12
4.8" = Section Width (B)
12" = Rim Diameter (D)
