Brake Band to Frame
- Locate the brake stud, typically welded to the rear-left side of the engine plate.
- Slide the bottom end of the brake band onto the brake stud.
- Insert a cotter pin through the slot in the brake band and the hole in the brake stud. The head of the cotter pin should face the rear of the kart.
- Spread and bend the cotter pin legs back to secure the assembly.
- Confirm the brake band is firmly attached. If the brake band has retaining arms, orient the arms upward.
Brake Band to Brake Rod
- Check the brake rod end: some rods have a bent end, others are straight and require a Brake Kit (#400261) to connect to the band.
- Align the hole in the brake rod with the loop in the brake band, ensuring the rod sits in the band's slot.
- Place a flat washer on the clevis pin and slide the clevis pin through the band and rod.
- Insert a cotter pin into the clevis pin, spread the prongs, and bend them back to secure.
Brake Band + Straight Rod Application
This configuration (straight rod + brake band + clevis pin + washer + cotter pins) was commonly used on Manco single-wheel-pull karts and is a generally accepted installation method. If the brake does not stop the kart effectively, the brake rod likely needs adjustment.
Brake Rod Adjustment
- If the brake pad does not press hard enough, shorten the brake rod by moving the forward fastener to the next hole toward the rear.
- Reassemble the connection and verify the pedal moves freely; do not overtighten fasteners.
- For scrub-brake systems (paddles that rub the rear wheels), additional adjustment can be made where the brake rod attaches to the brake lever.
